Assurance of Control Systems and Software

DNV offers independent third-party testing, verification, and consultancy services for control systems and automation networks.

Hardware In the Loop (HIL) testing of control systems should be considered when there is a high level of risk - whether related to safety, environmental impact, commercial consequences, or schedule delays. Conducting comprehensive HIL testing early in the project lifecycle will significantly reduce the likelihood of:

  • Design flaws and software bugs that could lead to incidents or accidents
  • Ineffective operation, user interfaces and alarm systems
  • Project delays due to incomplete or unready software

HIL testing shall ensure that the target system has been programmed, configured, and completed in accordance with relevant functional specifications and requirements.

We provide testing and verification of both stand-alone and integrated systems, and the method is applicable to any control system. Since introducing the HIL testing method to the industry in 2002, we have tested approximately 1,000 machines and systems across a wide range of assets, including drilling units, shuttle tankers, supply/service/crane/installation vessels, cruise ships, and more.

Beyond HIL testing, DNV also offers a range of services to support control system assurance, including control system FMECA/HAZID, incident investigations, network stress testing, human factor assessment and other specialized services.
